When our children were young we camped in tents to experience the great outdoors.   And we also enjoyed making the most of our meals at the campsite.   We spent time on our camping food list and enjoy deciding what foods to bring on our camping trips.

It’s true that one of my children’s favorite parts of camping was the fire.  And it’s never too early to get the campfire started and get involved with food preparations.  That is one of the best parts of camping in the great outdoors is a lovely campfire.  Plus who doesn’t  love all those camping dishes cooked over the open campfire.  It just makes the food taste so much better.

Easy Camping Meals

But we believe dinner should be easy. Everyone is tired after a day of exploring the outdoors.   So we came up with a few suggestions that will have dinner ready quickly.

But first a few other Camping Helps and Tips

Camping Dishes, easy camping meals

One of the easiest meals is Hamburgers and Hotdogs.  You could stop at a grocery store on the way to the campsite so the meat is still fresh.  And you might wish to buy enough to make sure you have enough for leftovers for lunch the following day.   Also, be sure to bring catsup, mayo, relish, and mustard from home and keep them in an ice chest.  And make sure you have charcoal and matches.    Just heat a can of pork and beans, or Ranch Style beans on the camp stove, add several different kinds of chips, and dinner is served.

Another super easy meal is canned stew.   So get a few large cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew, and heat it on a dutch oven over the campfire or on the camp stove    We usually bring cornbread muffins from home or sometimes the hubby makes his sourdough biscuits.  Either one is a treat with beef stew.  And you could add some canned corn or peas, and you have a very easy dinner. Remember to make sure you have a can opener in your camp kitchen box.

Grilled Pork Chops are another fun and easy dinner choice. You can use the grill provided at most campsites or bring your own Camping Grill from home.  All they need are a little salt and pepper unless you wish to bring more seasonings from home.   And barbecue sauce is optional.  Add a couple of cans of green beans and mashed potatoes. The easiest way to fix mashed potatoes is to use an Instant Potato Mix that requires only butter, water, and a little milk.   If you put your milk in a mason jar, it will keep it from spilling in the ice chest.

You could also add these amazing Baked Campfire Potatoes cooked in the coals to for one of our favorite camping dishes.

Kabobs are always a great choice for easy camping meals.   You can cut up the veggies and meat at home, then pack into separate ziplock baggies with a marinate and place into the ice chest.   Be sure and package the meat and vegetables into different bags.  Suggestions for vegetables include whole mushrooms, chunks of yellow squash, zucchini, bell pepper, onions, etc.    And you could use beef chunks, chicken or pork.
Then when it’s time for dinner you can thread them onto Metal Skewers at the campsite.  It’s a great way to get those kiddos to eat veggies and each skewer is an entire meal.

Easy Dessert Camping Dishes:

and Dessert Food to bring Camping

s'mores

  • A fun dessert is S’mores. Make sure you bring a few Marshmellow Roasting Skewers to roast the marshmallows. If you don’t have a campfire, you can use charcoal.    Sandwich the marshmallows and some chocolate in between two pieces of graham crackers. The warm marshmallows melt the chocolate and make this an extremely fun (if somewhat messy) treat for the whole family!
  • Another easy camping meals dessert to bring a frozen Sara Lee pound cake.  And then it can be covered with fresh strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries.
  • Also, you could bring homemade cookies or brownies fixed at home before the trip.

Other Food to bring Camping

  • If you are backpacking, one of the easiest meals is a can of Vienna sausage, some crackers, and trail mix. Whatever type of camping you choose, trail mix is a staple for a great snack and energy booster. One of the advantages of a trail mix is that you can make up your own recipe. Some of the ingredients we have used are Chex cereals, goldfish, nuts, raisins, and M & M’s.
  • Also, you can buy fancy pre-packaged foods from camping or sporting goods stores, but that is a little more expensive than these options.  But there are a few quick snacks or meals that are well worth the money.
