Make these Cherry Squares topped with a homemade cream cheese glaze for a great dessert or snack. This easy Cherry Square recipe uses canned cherry pie filling.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a 8×8 baking pan with nonstick cooking spray . In a medium size bowl, combine the flour and salt then set aside.
Beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and beat to combine completely.
Add the dry ingredients into the butter egg mixture and mix until very well combined.
Spread about two-thirds of the batter over the bottom of your 8 X 8 pan. Use your fingers to press the dough into the pan, making sure the dough is spread evenly.
Pour the cherry pie filling over the prepared batter and gently spread evenly.
Spoon the reserved crust dough over the top of the pie filling in pieces. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, until the top crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Remove from oven and place on rack to cool.
To make the Cream Cheese Glaze
While the cherry squares are cooling, make the glaze by beating together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and two tablespoons of milk until smooth. Add more milk if needed.
When the cherry squares are cooled completely, drizzle the cream cheese glaze over the top and cut into nine cherry squares
Serve each cherry square straight from the pan. They will stay fresher and more moist by leaving them in the pan
