Dehydrate the Fruit

  • Slice several apples and oranges into 1/2 inch thick slices horizontally. If they are any thicker, they will not dry well..
  • Make sure and slice the fruit horizontally so that in each slice there is the stem center. As it dehydrate the center creates a small hole which you will need to string the apple and orange slices.
  • Dry the orange and apple slices by placing them in a single layer on a wire rack. Place the wire rack on top of a baking sheet and bake at 200 degrees for three to four hours. Or use a dehydrator at 130 degrees for about 12 hours which is what I did.

Stringing the Apple and Orange Garland

  • This super easy orange garland starts with cutting a piece of jute string. You want it to be a little longer than the the space you wish to fill. Cut a few springs of rosemary from your garden or purchase.
  • When the fruit slices are dehydrated there is a center hole. You may have to enlarge the center hole a little by using an icepick to carefully widen the center hole. At intervals loop the jute string through the center hole of an orange slice and slide a sprig of rosemary through the loop and pull tight to secure.
  • Use the same procedure for the apples. Make a loop and thread it through the middle of the apple slice. Then place a cinnamon stick in the loop and pull tight.
  • We actually used hot glue on the rock fireplace to hang them. We hot glued the very ends of the jute and then on the back of the three bigger oranges. But you might to not use hot glue and use either Command strips or tape. The hot glue will peel off the rocks of my fireplace easily but it might not on yours.
