Easy Colored Rice Patriotic Candle Jars

May 22, 2013 by Evelyn 26 Comments

These inexpensive and easy Patriotic candle jars are made using colored rice or dyed rice.   Most everything we used we gathered around the house or bought at the Dollar store.

The summer months are filled with patriotic holidays,  starting with Memorial Day our red, white and blue decorations begin.  We add more decorations for Flag Day (June 14th) and then, of course, all the festive decorations appear for the 4th of July.

We are a very patriotic family, so proud of being an American and we live it every day but on our Nation’s holidays, we really go all out.  (can you hear me humming the Star-Spangled Banner?)

I wanted something new for this patriotic season but didn’t wish to buy anything else.  I have seen instructions on how to make colored rice on Pinterest and thought I would give it a go and make a few decorative candle jars.

How to Make Colored Rice or Dyed Rice Candle Jars:

Supplies needed:

  • 3 cups of Uncooked White Rice (1 cup for each color)
  • 2- Ziplock Quart Freezer Baggies
  • Blue Food Coloring
  • Red Food Coloring
  • 3-Stemless Wine Glasses
  • Votive Candles

Instructions:

Pour 1 cup of rice into each of the 2 ziplock freezer baggie (1 cup in each baggy).
Add blue food coloring to one, close the ziplock and mix it by massaging the rice through the baggie until the desired shade was reached.  Keep adding a few drops of food coloring each time until it gets to the desired shade.
Repeat this same step with the red color and the other baggie.  A deep red color may take more food coloring than blue.

Start with the red rice, pour 1/3 cup of the red colored rice into the vase and level it out. Add the undyed white rice and top with the blue colored rice.  Add a votive or tea candle on top.

*Tip:Using the ziplock baggies makes absolutely no mess and no cleanup, just throw them away.

And this project was so inexpensive.  We had rice and food dye on hand and we only had to purchase the stemless wine glasses.
