Glazed Apple Hand Pies

Make these easy glazed apple hand pies using this homemade apple pie spice glaze. We use this glaze for pies on these puff pastry hand pies but they are delicious without it.

Sometimes you just crave fun little apple pies.  You know, with a crust to die for and a flavorful apple filling like these glazed apple hand pies.   We used store bought puff pastry but made a homemade apple filling for them.  And then topped them with an apple pie spice glaze.

These little pies are baked in the oven and the homemade filling is sweet and flavorful.  And we also added the same apple pie spice to the glaze. 

 

What you will need for these puff pastry hand pies:

 

apples, cinnamon, sugar, lemon juice, apple cider

 

Ingredients:

  • 5 apples
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • A 17.3 oz package puff pastry containing two sheets

 

What you will need for the apple pie spice glaze:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • Milk, as needed (1-2 Tablespoons)

Instructions for  making glazed apple hand pies:

Leave the peeling on the apples and core all your apples then chop them into bite size pieces.  Place the apple chunks into a large bowl.  

 

Flour and cinnamon for turnovers

 

Measure out the flour, salt and the apple pie spice into medium size bowl and mix very well.

Mix the apple cider vinegar and lemon juice together in a small bowl.  Pour over the chopped apples and mix well.  

 

Pour sugar onto apple chunks

 

Measure and pour the white sugar onto the apples and mix.

Pour the flour/spice mixture over the sugared apples and stir.

Stir to coat the apple completely with the mixture and let sit for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes are up preheat your oven according to puff pastry directions and temperatures.  Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.   Unroll and cut the puff pastry with a pizza cutter into 4” squares.  Place a tablespoon of the apple pie mixture in the centre of each square of puff pastry.

Fold the turnovers by bringing one corner of the puff pastry diagonally across and pressing to the diagonally opposite corner.  Press the edges of the folded puff pastry together to form a seal, and then use a fork to make a crimped edge.

Set each turnover on the prepared baking sheets.  And make two small cuts in the top of the puff pastry using kitchen shears. Place into preheated oven and bake for 12 minutes, until golden brown.

Combine the glaze for pie ingredients in a small bowl and adjust the sweetness to your personal preferences.

After removing the pies from the oven, allow to cool.   Then take the glaze for pies and drizzle over the hand pies and allow to set before serving.

You could serve these delicious apple hand pies with or without the glaze.  And they are delicious as an after school treat or a dessert that could be topped with ice cream and eaten with a fork.
