I have never even heard of buttermilk pie growing up but it’s a very popular recipe in this part of Texas.  At most social functions or pot luck dinners, there is usually a couple Texas Buttermilk Pies.  It’s the most amazing pie, it’s not what you would expect. It’s a lemony custard creation that brings those southern farmhouse vibes into your inner being with each and every bite.

buttermilk for pie

This Southern Buttermilk pie is one of many desperation pie recipes. Desperation pies came about in the years of the great depression in the United States.  These pies were made from simple ingredients that one almost always have on hand.  Even though buttermilk is not always in our kitchens now, it was then, since most had a milk cow.  Other desperations pies include chess pie, shoofly pie, vinegar pie and mock apple pie.  But I believe a Buttermilk Pie has risen to the top and is still very common.

  1. I am so glad that you like the Buttermilk Pie. I have a recipe from the farm in VA that my relatives have been making for a 100 years. Every time I make it everyone wants the recipe. When I go and visit my son he wants his very own Buttermilk Pie. Aren't they great. So glad that you like it.
Have a great week and that little restaurant sounds so good.

  2. This sounds delicious, Evelyn ! Very much the same as our traditional milk tart, but we use milk and give it a topping of cinnamon sugar 🙂 Must try yours !
